Root canal is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or diseased. During a root canal, the dentist or endodontist removes the affected pulp. The chamber of the pulp and root of the tooth are cleaned and sealed. If the infected pulp is not removed, it may hurt and become inflamed, and it may be necessary to remove the tooth.
